BROOKLYN IZ HOME

A newly, ongoing series of black & white photographs documenting the spirit of Brooklyn. The start of this series began at the Spike Lee Cookout, celebrating the 35th Anniversary of Do The Right Thing in 2024. I don’t often engage in street photography. I feel like a lot of my work subconsciously runs away from spontaneity and point and shoot moments. I think for this being my real first time doing so, I understand why capturing the random bursts of energy, movement, an unplanned stillness can sometimes be a lot more meaningful and special than something that’s more arranged and structured.

For some reason I enjoy seeing these kind of photographs in black and white. I think there's a different sort of purpose that's served in this color grade. Without the pull of color, the focus shifts directly to the expression and movement of the photo. Gestures, texture, and atmosphere are emphasized.

I find moments like this to be a direct representation of Brooklyn. There’s a cultural heartbeat that rings about the neighborhood through this shared memory. Children and adults doing double dutch, fathers and uncles firing the grill, neighbors seated on the brownstone stoops chatting and laughing about, and people in the middle of the street dancing and shouting. Brooklyn is indeed home.
